Best dunning management software for Shopify subscriptions and store orders

The best dunning management software for a Shopify store depends on where your billing runs and what fails. If you sell subscriptions through Recharge or Loop, start with the retries those apps already include, then add a dunning layer such as Churn Buster (from 269 USD per month) when failed renewals are a real line in your churn report. If you also lose one-time orders to declined cards, a recovery platform that covers both, such as CartAbandon Scale at 199 USD per month billed yearly, keeps it in one panel.

Which dunning software to buy, by store type

Most dunning roundups are written for SaaS companies billing through Stripe. A Shopify store has a different problem. Billing lives inside a subscription app, card retries happen there, and a declined card on a one-time order never reaches that app at all. So the first question is not which tool has the most features. It is which failures you are actually losing money on.

  • Small subscription store on the free Shopify Subscriptions app. Use its retry settings and a clear payment reminder email. A paid tool will not pay for itself until failed renewals cost you more than the plan.
  • Recharge or Loop store with a few hundred subscribers. The built-in retries are included in what you already pay. Tune the retry schedule before you buy anything.
  • Subscription brand where involuntary churn shows up in monthly revenue. Add a dedicated dunning layer that reads decline reasons and writes better messages than a generic "update your card" email.
  • Store with both subscriptions and one-time orders. Pick a tool that treats a declined renewal and a declined checkout as two flows in one place. That is what we built failed payment recovery in CartAbandon to do.

Dunning software for Shopify compared side by side

Prices come from each vendor's public pricing page or app listing at the time of writing. Subscription apps charge a monthly fee plus a fee on every transaction, so their real cost grows with revenue.

Tool What it is Price Dunning in that price Best for
Shopify Subscriptions Shopify's own subscription app Free Basic retry settings: number of attempts, days between them, then skip, pause or cancel New subscription stores
Recharge Subscription billing app Starter 99 USD per month plus 1.49 percent and 19 cents per transaction, Plus 499 USD plus 1.34 percent and 19 cents Failed payment recovery with AI-powered retries on every plan Established subscription brands on Shopify
Loop Subscriptions Subscription billing app Starter 99 USD per month plus 1 percent per transaction, Pro 399 USD plus 0.75 percent Smart dunning with up to 15 retries listed on Starter Brands that want portal and dunning in one app
Churn Buster Dedicated dunning layer Dunning from 269 USD per month, priced at about 0.1 percent of MRR, month to month Dunning campaigns, analytics, A/B tests, retention team guidance Subscription brands where failed renewals are a big churn driver
Stripe Billing Billing platform outside Shopify checkout 0.7 percent of billing volume pay as you go Smart Retries and failed payment emails included Headless or custom checkouts billing through Stripe
CartAbandon Recovery platform for carts, checkouts and payments Growth 149 USD per month (74 yearly), Scale 399 USD (199 yearly), flat Growth covers declined one-time orders, Scale adds subscription dunning for Shopify subscription apps, Recharge and WooCommerce Subscriptions Stores losing both orders and renewals to declined cards

What dunning really costs a Shopify subscription brand

Take a brand with 40 000 USD of monthly subscription revenue on Recharge, plus 600 one-time orders a month through the normal Shopify checkout. Retries are already inside the Recharge fee, so the question is what you pay on top to recover more.

Option Extra monthly cost What it adds
Tune built-in retries only 0 USD A better retry schedule and a clearer reminder email
Churn Buster Dunning From 269 USD Dunning campaigns by decline reason, testing and guidance, renewals only
CartAbandon Scale 399 USD, or 199 USD billed yearly Renewal dunning plus declined checkout recovery, cart, browse and checkout abandonment, texts and WhatsApp included

If failed renewals are your only leak, a dedicated dunning layer on month-to-month terms is a clean choice, and on monthly billing it costs less than our Scale plan. Once you count declined one-time orders and abandoned carts too, one flat plan usually beats paying for two tools. Either way, do the math with your own numbers: failed renewals per month, average order value and how many months a subscriber stays.

Notes on each dunning tool for Shopify

Shopify Subscriptions

Free, simple and fine to start with. You set how many times a failed payment is retried and how many days apart, then choose whether the subscription is skipped, paused or cancelled. Messaging is a standard reminder template, and there is no logic by decline reason.

Recharge

The most common subscription app for established Shopify brands. Failed payment recovery with AI-powered retries is included on every plan, so you are already paying for it. The fee on every transaction is the part to watch as revenue grows.

Loop Subscriptions

A subscription app with a strong customer portal. Its Starter plan lists smart dunning with up to 15 retries. Good if you want retention offers and dunning in the same app as billing.

Churn Buster

A focused dunning and cancel flow product that sits on top of Shopify, Recharge, Loop, Skio, Stay AI, Stripe and more. No contract and no commission, priced by MRR. The bundle with Cancel Flows starts at 430 USD per month. Strong if renewals are your whole business.

Stripe Billing

Relevant only if your subscriptions bill through Stripe rather than a Shopify app, for example on a headless storefront. Smart Retries and recovery emails are included in the 0.7 percent billing fee.

CartAbandon

Built for stores, not SaaS. It reads the decline code, sends a secure payment update link instead of a discount, times soft decline reminders to the shopper's payday pattern and stops the moment payment succeeds. The same panel runs cart, checkout and browse recovery, explained on our abandoned cart software page.

What to check before you pay for dunning software

Does it know a soft decline from a hard one?

An expired card will not work on the tenth retry. A card with insufficient funds often works on the 1st of the month. Software that sends the same email to both wastes retries and annoys customers. Our guide to failed payment decline codes shows which codes deserve a retry and which need a new card.

Does it cover one-time orders too?

Subscription dunning tools only see renewals. A shopper whose card fails at your regular checkout is invisible to them, and that is often the bigger number for stores with a strong one-time catalog. Ask every vendor this question directly.

Does it keep payment notices out of your marketing?

A notice about a shopper's own failed payment is transactional. It should carry no promotion and no discount, follow quiet hours and stay apart from marketing frequency caps. Mixing the two hurts trust and creates consent problems for texts.

What about wholesale invoices?

If part of your revenue is B2B on net terms, unpaid invoices are not a card problem and dunning software will not see them. That is a job for accounts receivable automation that chases every invoice, separate from store payments.

Our pick by situation

Choose the built-in retries of Shopify Subscriptions, Recharge or Loop while failed renewals are a small number, and tune the schedule first. Choose Churn Buster when renewals are your whole business and failed payments are a top churn driver. Choose CartAbandon when declined cards hit both one-time orders and renewals, and you want them recovered in the same panel as abandoned carts on a flat plan with texts included. Compare all plans on the pricing page.

FAQ

What is the best dunning management software?

For Shopify stores, the best dunning management software is the one that matches where billing runs. Recharge and Loop include retries already. Churn Buster is a strong dedicated layer for subscription brands from 269 USD per month. CartAbandon fits stores that need dunning plus declined checkout and cart recovery on one flat plan.

Does Shopify have dunning?

Yes, in a basic form. The free Shopify Subscriptions app lets you set the number of retry attempts and the days between them, then skip, pause or cancel the subscription. It sends standard payment reminders, but it does not adjust messages or timing by decline reason.

Does Recharge have dunning?

Yes. Recharge includes failed payment recovery with AI-powered retries on its Starter, Plus and Custom plans, according to its pricing page. Many brands add a separate dunning layer on top when they want messaging by decline reason, testing or recovery for one-time orders as well.

How much does dunning software cost?

Prices vary by model. Shopify Subscriptions is free, Recharge and Loop include retries in plans from 99 USD per month plus a transaction fee, Churn Buster starts at 269 USD per month, and Stripe Billing charges 0.7 percent of billing volume. CartAbandon Scale is 399 USD per month, or 199 USD billed yearly.

Do I need dunning software if my subscription app already retries payments?

Not always. Built-in retries are enough while failed renewals are a small number. A dedicated tool pays off when failed payments are a top reason subscribers leave, or when declined one-time orders also cost you money, because subscription apps do not see those.

How many times should a failed subscription payment be retried?

Most subscription apps default to about three attempts spread over several days, and some allow ten or more. Spacing matters more than count: retry soft declines around common paydays and skip retries entirely for hard declines such as expired or closed cards, where only a new card helps.
