Best SMS marketing app for Shopify and Shopify SMS apps compared by real cost

The best SMS marketing app for Shopify depends on what most of your texts do. If you send weekly promos and drops, pick a campaign platform such as Postscript or Klaviyo. If most of the money comes from abandoned cart and checkout texts, pick a recovery tool that includes texts in the plan, such as CartAbandon, from 49 USD per month or 24 USD billed yearly. Under a few hundred texts a month, pay-per-text apps cost the least.

Which Shopify SMS app to buy, by store type

Most "best Shopify SMS apps" lists rank tools by features. The better question is what your texts are for, because that decides what you pay.

  • SMS is a campaign channel for you. Launches, drops and weekly promo texts to a big list. Postscript is built for that on Shopify. Attentive fits large brands with a managed program.
  • Email is the center and SMS is an add-on. Klaviyo, or Omnisend Pro, keeps both in one place, priced by contacts with text credits on top.
  • You only text abandoned carts, and not many. A pay-per-text tool such as CartBoss, or Postscript Starter with its 49 USD minimum spend.
  • Recovery texts bring in most of your SMS revenue, and they keep growing. A recovery platform with texts included and a decision per cart. That is what we built CartAbandon for. See the abandoned cart text and SMS page.

One update many 2026 lists still miss: Yotpo shut down its SMSBump email and SMS product on December 31, 2025. If a guide still recommends it, the guide is out of date.

Shopify SMS apps compared side by side

Prices come from each vendor's public pricing page where one exists, and otherwise from recent third-party pricing guides. They change often, so check before you buy.

Klaviyo Active profiles plus SMS credits Email and SMS from about 35 USD per month (third-party guides) About 1 credit per US text Stores where email marketing is the center
Attentive Custom contract Quote only Quote only Large brands that want a managed SMS program
Omnisend Billable contacts, SMS as a separate subscription on Pro Pro from 59 USD per month, SMS subscription from 10 USD 0.009 to 0.007 USD per SMS Newsletters first, texts second
TxtCart Plan by orders plus per message Starter 29 USD, Growth 99 USD, Pro 499 USD per month 0.011 to 0.007 USD per SMS, carrier fees passed through Conversational SMS on Shopify
CartBoss Pay per text, no subscription No monthly fee Varies by country Low-volume stores wanting cart texts only
CartAbandon Flat plan by recovered-cart attempts 49 USD per month, 24 USD billed yearly 250 to 15 000 SMS included, WhatsApp from Growth Stores where cart recovery is most of the SMS money

What per-text pricing really costs at your volume

A text at 0.008 USD sounds like nothing. The bill comes from three lines stacked together: the plan fee, the message fee and the carrier fee, which Postscript lists at about 0.0033 USD per US SMS on average and about 0.008 USD per MMS.

Take a Shopify store sending 3 000 abandoned cart texts and 6 000 campaign texts a month on Postscript Growth. That is 100 USD for the plan, 72 USD in message fees and about 30 USD in carrier fees, so roughly 202 USD a month. Switch half the campaign texts to MMS with a product image and the message and carrier fees climb quickly, because MMS costs several times more per send.

Now split the job. If campaigns stay in your SMS tool and the 3 000 recovery texts move to a plan where texts are included, the campaign bill shrinks and the recovery cost stops moving with traffic. On CartAbandon Scale those 3 000 texts sit inside 399 USD per month, or 199 USD billed yearly, together with 4 000 WhatsApp messages, recovery email and web push.

The number that matters is cost per recovered order. Take what you spend on cart texts in a month and divide it by the orders those texts brought back. Anything above a few dollars per order on a 60 USD average cart is worth a second look.

Why abandoned cart texts need a different tool than promo texts

Campaign texts go to a list. Recovery texts go to one shopper about one cart, and that changes what a good tool does.

Timing per shopper

A recovery text works best within the first hour, but not at 2 a.m. in the shopper's time zone. Campaign tools schedule sends for the list. Recovery tools need quiet hours per contact.

A choice between text and email

Not every cart deserves a text. A 30 USD cart from a first-time visitor may close just as well from an email that costs nothing extra. The AI cart recovery decision engine picks the channel per cart, so texts go where they pay.

No reflex coupon

Promo texts carry offers by design. Recovery texts often should not, because a returning customer who left to check shipping was coming back anyway. CartAbandon sets a maximum discount and a minimum margin, and only offers a code when a cart needs one.

Replies from real shoppers

Shoppers answer recovery texts with questions about sizes, shipping dates and returns. If your team cannot answer them fast, an AI customer service assistant that answers and qualifies messages can take the first reply so a ready buyer is not left waiting.

What to ask before you install a Shopify SMS app

What is the all-in cost per text?

Add the message fee, the carrier fee and any MMS premium. Some pricing pages show only the message fee.

Is there a minimum spend or a contract?

Minimum monthly spends and annual commitments set your floor even in a slow month. Ask for both in writing.

Does it take a percent of recovered revenue?

Some cart recovery add-ons bill a share of the sales they claim. TxtCart, for example, lists 10 percent of recovered sales for its P2P cart recovery add-on.

How does it handle consent?

US texting rules expect clear opt-in, a working STOP reply and quiet hours. Make sure the app records where and when each shopper agreed.

Does it work outside Shopify?

If you also run a WooCommerce or Magento store, check platform support. Several SMS apps are Shopify only. CartAbandon covers all three, see the Shopify abandoned cart app page for setup.

When CartAbandon is the right SMS app, and when it is not

CartAbandon fits Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento stores where abandoned cart, abandoned checkout and declined card texts bring in most of the SMS revenue, and where a bill that grows with every text has started to hurt. Texts, WhatsApp from Growth, recovery email and an exit-intent offer share one flat plan, and declined cards get a payment update link instead of a coupon. Read about dunning software for failed payment recovery for that part.

It is not the right fit if you want to send SMS campaigns, run text-to-join keywords or build a promo list. We do not do that. Many stores keep a campaign tool for promos and move recovery to us. If you are weighing that today, our Postscript alternative and Klaviyo alternative pages show the side-by-side numbers.

FAQ

What is the best SMS marketing app for Shopify?

For SMS campaigns, Postscript and Attentive are the common Shopify picks, and Klaviyo suits stores where email leads. For abandoned cart texts specifically, a recovery tool with texts included in the plan, such as CartAbandon from 49 USD per month, usually costs less per recovered order once volume grows.

How much does SMS marketing cost on Shopify?

Expect a plan fee plus about 0.007 to 0.011 USD per US SMS on most Shopify SMS apps, with carrier fees of about 0.003 USD per text added on some, and MMS several times higher. Contract platforms quote custom prices. CartAbandon includes 250 to 15 000 texts in flat plans from 49 USD per month.

Is Klaviyo or Postscript better for Shopify SMS?

Postscript is SMS first and suits brands where texting campaigns drive revenue. Klaviyo is email first with SMS added through credits, which suits stores that want one tool for both. For abandoned cart texts alone, many stores use either for campaigns and a recovery tool for carts.

Does Shopify have built-in SMS marketing?

Shopify sends order and shipping notifications by SMS, and its own marketing tools focus on email. For SMS marketing campaigns or abandoned cart texts, Shopify stores install an app from the Shopify App Store.

Is SMSBump still available?

No. Yotpo announced in August 2025 that it was winding down its email and SMS products and ended SMSBump on December 31, 2025. Stores that used it have moved to other Shopify SMS apps.

Are abandoned cart texts worth it?

Usually, yes, when they go to shoppers who opted in and arrive within the first hour. The cost question is whether each text pays for itself. Sending texts only to carts likely to need them, and email to the rest, keeps cost per recovered order low.
