Best abandoned cart app for Shopify and cart recovery apps compared by cost
The best abandoned cart app for Shopify is the one whose bill matches how your store makes money. Shopify's built-in abandoned checkout email costs nothing extra and suits small stores. Klaviyo and Omnisend charge by contact count and add SMS on top. Recart is an SMS-first platform with monthly commitments. CartBoss bills per text. CartAbandon is a flat plan from 49 USD per month, or 24 USD billed yearly, with SMS included and an AI decision on every cart.
Which Shopify abandoned cart app should you buy
Here is the short version, by store type.
- Under about 50 orders a month. Turn on Shopify's own abandoned checkout email and write a better subject line. A paid app rarely pays for itself yet.
- Your list is the business, and you send weekly newsletters. Klaviyo or Omnisend. You get recovery inside a full email marketing platform, priced by contacts.
- You want texts only and send few of them. A pay-per-text tool such as CartBoss keeps the bill tied to usage.
- You lose real money to abandoned carts, declined cards and sold-out variants, and your margin cannot absorb a coupon on every cart. A recovery platform with a flat price and discount guardrails. That is what we built CartAbandon for. See the Shopify abandoned cart app page for setup.

Why the billing model matters more than the feature list
Almost every Shopify abandoned cart app can send an email after a cart is left. The differences that show up on your bank statement come from how each one bills.
Contact-based pricing (Klaviyo, Omnisend) grows as your list grows. A store that runs popups and giveaways can double its contact count without recovering a single extra cart, and the bill follows the list, not the recovery. Klaviyo has counted every active profile since February 2025, including people who have not opened anything in months.
Per-text pricing (CartBoss, and SMS credits on Klaviyo and Omnisend) is fair at low volume and painful at high volume. Every reminder costs money whether it works or not, so there is a quiet push to send fewer, later texts.
Commitment plans (Recart and similar SMS platforms) bring a managed program and higher floors. They make sense once SMS is a major revenue line, not as a first recovery tool.
Flat plans (CartAbandon) set the price by how many carts enter recovery each month. SMS and WhatsApp sit inside plan limits, and you see an upgrade prompt at 80 percent use instead of a surprise invoice.
The hidden cost is the coupon, not the app
Most Shopify stores pay more in discounts than in app fees. If every abandoner gets 10 percent off, you hand that 10 percent to buyers who were coming back anyway: the returning customer who left to check shipping, the shopper who got pulled into a meeting.
Run the numbers on your own store. Say you recover 120 orders a month at an 85 USD average and every one used a 10 percent code. That is 1 020 USD a month in discounts. If half of those buyers would have returned without the code, a tool that held back the discount for them saves about 510 USD a month, more than most apps cost.
That is why we built CartAbandon around a decision per cart. The AI cart recovery decision engine looks at customer type, cart value, past discount use, consent and stock before choosing a channel, a delay and whether to offer anything at all. You set the maximum discount, the minimum margin and who never gets a code. Price-sensitive shoppers who left to compare are the ones who get an offer, and if you want to see what rival stores charge for the same products, you can track competitor prices before you decide how deep that offer should go.
What to ask before you install any Shopify cart recovery app
What will I pay at twice my current size?
Ask for the price at double your contacts, orders and texts. Apps that look cheap at launch often cost the most at the size you are aiming for.
Does it take a commission on recovered orders?
Some Shopify apps charge a percent of the revenue they claim. Know how they decide what counts as recovered before you agree.
Can it handle declined cards differently from abandoned carts?
A shopper whose card was declined needs a payment update link, not a coupon. Check whether the app reads decline codes. Ours does, see dunning software for failed payment recovery.
How does it prove what it earned?
Last-click attribution flatters every recovery tool. A holdout group, where a slice of carts gets no reminder, shows what the app really added.
When CartAbandon is the right Shopify app, and when it is not
CartAbandon is a good fit for Shopify stores doing roughly 100 to 20 000 orders a month that want email, SMS, WhatsApp, web push and an exit-intent offer in one recovery tool, with a price that does not move as the list grows. It also covers declined cards, back in stock and price drop alerts from Growth up.
It is not the right fit if you want one tool for newsletters and campaigns. We do not send them. Many stores keep Klaviyo or Omnisend for the newsletter and switch their abandoned cart flows to CartAbandon. If that is you, read our comparisons with Klaviyo and Omnisend.
FAQ
What is the best abandoned cart app for Shopify?
It depends on your size and billing preference. Small stores do well with Shopify's built-in abandoned checkout email. Stores built around newsletters pick Klaviyo or Omnisend. Stores that lose real revenue to carts and declined cards, and want a flat price with discount guardrails, pick a recovery platform such as CartAbandon, from 49 USD per month.
Does Shopify have a built-in abandoned cart email?
Yes. Shopify sends an abandoned checkout email to shoppers who entered contact details at checkout, at no extra cost. It does not cover carts left before checkout, does not text, and sends the same message to everyone, so most growing stores add an app.
How much does a Shopify abandoned cart app cost?
Expect anything from pay-per-text (a few cents per message) to several hundred USD per month for SMS platforms with commitments. Contact-based tools start around 16 to 35 USD per month and grow with your list. CartAbandon costs 49 to 999 USD per month, or half that billed yearly.
Is Klaviyo or Omnisend better for abandoned carts on Shopify?
Both handle basic abandoned cart flows well and both price by contacts. Omnisend lists lower starting prices, while Klaviyo is stronger in segmentation and reporting. Neither decides per cart whether a discount is needed, so stores with thin margins often move recovery to a dedicated tool.
Do abandoned cart apps slow down a Shopify store?
A well-built app loads one small script and does its work on the server. Check page speed before and after install. CartAbandon adds one small async script to the storefront and runs all recovery logic on its own servers, so theme speed stays the same.
